Club history

Beginning in 1923, the Club played at the Kilburn Speedway until the site was taken over by S.A. Railways as the Islington Rail Yards. The Railways remained until 1999 when the land was remediated. It was then opened to the public in 2003 as Jack Watkins Park with a memorial plaque acknowledging the Club's association with the site and the workers who had died of asbestos-related diseases. The Club spent two years playing at British Tube Makers Oval until the facility at Lionel Avenue was ready. The first clubrooms at Blair Athol were a tin shed, built and paid for by the families of Elliott, Farrow, Fergusson, Howson, Kilworth, McConnochie, O'Keeffe, Tilbrook and Young. Originally called Islington United, the name of the Club was changed to Chicago, the name of the district at that time, and led to the Club nickname, the 'Chics'. However, in 1932, residents of Chicago petitioned to have the name of the district changed because of its association with the notorious American city, and so the Club became known as Kilburn. The first set of guernseys was made out of wheat bags with holes cut out for the arms and head, but this didn't stop the 'Chics' from becoming a force in the North Adelaide District Association for nearly 40 years. The Club applied to join the SAAFL in 1939 and 1940, and would have been admitted in the latter year if St.Peters O.C., who were in doubt, had not formed. However, it was not until 1958 that Kilburn joined the SAAFL, and under the astute guidance of former North Adelaide ruckman John Tidswell, rose from A3 to A1 in just 3 seasons, losing the 1961 A1 Grand Final to University. The Club slumped to A3 in the mid-'60s and again in the '70s, but in a repetition of 1959-61, nearly became the first SAAFL club to win consecutive premierships in A3, A2 and A1 when it finished third in A1 in 1979. The club-rooms at Blair Athol Reserve had a colts room added in 1971 and a canteen and gymnasium in 1979-80. By the beginning of the '90s, Kilburn had established itself as a top SAAFL club with 3 A1 Grand Final appearances in 4 seasons. In 1996 the Enfield Council was looking to spend some surplus funds in the Enfield area before amalgamating with the Port Adelaide Council. The Club lobbied the Council, and in 1997 a major renovation of the clubrooms costing $900,000 occurred with the Council contributing $800,000 and a loan for the balance. In 1998 the club nickname was changed from "The Chics" to "
The Knights". In 1999 the Club received $160,000 from the Federal Government and the Port Adelaide Enfield Council to install lighting towers at Blair Athol Reserve which allowed night games to be played at the venue. In 2001 the J.J.O'Keeffe Gates, named after one of the founders of the Chicago club, which stood at Carroll Avenue adjacent to the Islington site since 1952, were relocated to Blair Athol Reserve. In 2003 the Club again lobbied successfully to win a waver of all the building loans undertaken with the Council by sporting clubs in the area (12 in all). The Club record-holder for games played is Kerrin Martin with 404 games.

2011, Rnd 18, D4: Unley v Kilburn | Brenton Westell |

Whilst for the other sides there was a week to go before finals, this round brought them early to Unley as they battled Kilburn for the last spot in the top 5.  It was a sudden death playoff at Jet Park with both sides having 10 wins a piece, no other result having an impact on the makeup of the final 5.    Unley had narrowly avoided defeat last time the teams met, but in the i

2011, Rnd 09, D4: Kilburn v Unley | Brenton Westell | The last round before the mid season break saw 4th placed Unley take on a Kilburn side sniffing around for a spot in the 5. Kilburn’s form has been a little inconsistent but they’ve pushed some of the top teams in earlier rounds and had some solid wins to boot. With the highly regarded Jamie Thomas at the helm it was a game full of potential pitfalls for the Jets coming off a comprehensive...

2010, Rnd 08, C3: Prince Alfred OC v Kilburn | HeitmannA |

Whilst PAOC player Justin "Roy" Trim believes he will be celebrating his 300th game this weekend in round 9, all those at the Club know that his real 300th was played in this match in round 8.  Despite the Kilburn forfeit, the SAAFL requires the opposition to submit a team sheet.  Roy has made every effort to get his 300th game to fall on a home game.  So much so, that he withdrew o
